A WOMAN'S JOURNEY INTO THE LAND OF SPORTS ART

Hello, and welcome to my blog.

I want to tell you a little bit about my journey into The Land of Sports Art.

Someone asked me a FQA. How did you come to do sports art. Then someone else said, I never heard of a Black Woman/African American/Woman of Color. doing what you do.

To be real, and honest, when I started out drawing and painting sports art was a distant galaxy away. Not that I didn't like sports. I was the only girl in a house with 3 brothers, Sports was always in my life, however I leaned toward landscapes, people, vases all the girly stuff associated with women artist, In high school and college you learn to understand everything has a shadow, where is the light coming from, where is the vanishing point, throw paint on the canvas and be free, the history of art 101 and 505, so you have certain standards set into motion. During your study of history past and present, you discover that you connect with one artist work over another.

I took to Leonardo Da vinci. I loved that we shared being left handers for one, but that wasn't the draw. No, it was his pure genius of art. How he was a designer, and painter, what he did to become a master of the human anatomy, the Last Supper, a masterpiece. Things we use today, that we didn't know he designed amazed me.
Norman Rockwell was another artist whose work I was drawn to. I liked the way he told a story with his brush that would have a huge impact on everyone who viewed it. Vincent van gogh called out my free spirit, "forget everything you were taught and let it just flow", just let it happen. Starry Night is my favorite. Then I saw the poster for National Lampoons Vacation and Conan by artist Boris. I had never seen anything like it. His use of colors, composition, strokes and like Da Vinci, his work on the human anatomy was breathtaking. Lastly was the late Thomas Kindkade, who was not like by a number of artist, however I think he was as great as Claude Monet even better, an amazing impressionist.  Somehow I think a little of them all found their way into my work which would be defined by me as a fine mess on canvas.

Being inspired by that greatness did not find it's way into my early work. I was very traditional, I set up still life's waiting for the sun to come in at the right time of day so that I can capture the natural light for my piece. Portraits were one of my favorite things to do, so I was always painting someone, and seascapes were a daily project sometime. I just love to see water, so I painted like a mad scientist. People, family and friends would say, you need to pick a style and just stay with that. Well that's pretty hard for an artist would wants to just be free to express herself. Well what was left to do but add"Sports Art" which is were all the artist I connected with come out for some  reason

Mike Trout, Angels Baseball, Angels, MVP, Homerun
MIKE TROUT ( ODYSSEY)
Somebody made the mistake of bringing me a few copies of Beckett magazine one day. When I opened it I was speechless. The inside cover art was the most awesome sports art, who knew. It sparked something in me. There was an amazing painting of John Elway running with the ball on the beach, with warm oranges and brilliant colors like the Trout painting here. Air fighter jets on the move, it was great. I knew I wanted to do that kind of art. Even if people were going to think I was crazy, women don't do sports art, it a mens arena. I thought to myself, I want to be on the cover of Beckett and paint unique and exciting pieces of art like this. Well Beckett didn't get the memo yet, that they should put the first Woman of Color Sports Artist on their cover. but I'm expecting the call anytime, so there still time for them to make history and inspire young female artist to step into the arena all over the world. Don't give up on them, somebody else might beat them, but I have faith in them.

Ok, so I set my sights on sports art. I didn't at all give up on my beloved mainstream art, sometimes symbolic message, art for my girls, or the christian in me. I just added a new like Sports Art. The journey was long, because most times, moms have to put there career dreams on hold to raise a family like I did. Then when make the decision to step back in and take a chance. The journey was tough. When you are a woman of color, you know whatever you want to do, you have to work harder for it, while remaining humble and a lady. Do it with grace, but by all means do it and don't step over anyone to get it, to much is given, much is required. I listened to honest criticism, and accepted guidance from piers and professionals, I took heed to my weak areas and worked harder on improving. Timing is everything, so it's my time to share my art with you and the world.

So now you know how I got here. I'm thankful to have an opportunity to paint amazing art by Gods grace, I'm thankful for my Husband, family and friends who support me. I look forward to getting to know my collectors as time marches on, and hope that you sign up for my newsletter where I can keep you posted on what's new. I hope to see and meet you at events that I share with you or that you invite me to.

God Bless you my new friend, thanks for reading my post.
